Which One is Best for iPhone App Testing – iPhone QA / Web QA?

Testing is a procedure of technical investigation that is intended to reveal quality-related information about the product with respect to the context in which it is ordained to operate. App testing is an essential process that comprises part of the application development life-cycle. Through testing you can analyze how your developed application will perform in a real-world environment by installing and testing it directly on iPhone or iPod touch.

iPhone testing is more or less similar to website testing. Website testing involves various kinds of testing like; functionality testing, GUI testing, security testing etc. Similarly we check the iPhone application for its functionality, display of the various images and content and data protection. In website testing, for detecting security issues, we use the following techniques: -

  • Penetration testing.
  • Password cracking
  • URL Testing
  • Virus Detectors etc.

Whereas the security testing of iPhone app testing is done in a different manner. Following features can be adapted for the security of the iPhone apps: -

  • Encryption
  • Remote Wipe
  • Local wipe

In website testing we check for the scalability of the website that include stress testing and load testing. In this we check the performance of the website when subjected to various kinds of load by the users. On the contrary, iPhone applications are free from such kind of testing modus operandi, as the application has to be uploaded on a single device.

In the iPhone applications we focus more on the memory issues as many of the non-reproducible bugs you come across while testing iPhone apps are related to memory problems. It is quintessential to know and report available free memory before launching an application. Consequently, a crashing defect may vanish when there’s plenty of free memory available.

A1 technology’s iPhone application Quality Assurance team verify applications in its entirety and test the functionality of each setting related to the application. The team works in close co-ordination with the application developers to identify and resolve all crash points. Our testing experts test the behavior of iPhone app in low connectivity mode and verify proper behavior.

A-1 Technology’s quality analysts measure the memory usage of the application to determinate all memory leaks and test the application in the sleep mode. The iPhone Quality Analysts possess the expertise to resolve all the testing issues and ensures that your applications run smoothly.

Best Wi-Fi Apps for iPhone

It started its life as a harmless little gadget that let you carry your music collection wherever you go. However, as the iPod evolved it got incremental updates like color screen, video support, lighter and more storage along the way. But when Apple launched the Touch, it created a stir and changed the way we perceive MP3 players.

Today the iPod touch is in its third iteration and continues to be the object of desire for many music lovers. Apart from the music and video playback capabilities, the main attraction for getting an iPod Touch is its apps. In this article we will be focusing on a few apps that take advantage of a mostly seldom used feature in the iPod Touch – Wi-Fi. Not only can you use it to surf the Internet and check the weather, but also do many other productive things with it. This will of course work with the iPhone as well. All you need is a Wi-Fi router and internet access.

AirVideo – The best invention since sliced bread!

AirVideo is a paid app (free version also available) on the Appstore that allows you to stream videos straight from your PC on to your iPod. Now this may not seem like a big deal since there are many players that can do it, but only for MP4 videos that the iPod supports. The trump card of AirVideo is their new Live Conversion feature that allows you to watch most popular video formats (AVI, MKV, etc) while it converts the video on the fly, how cool is that.

After installing the server on your PC, simply add the path to your folders you wish to view on your iPod. You can even password protect it if you want. After that simply install the app (paid or free) on your iPod and it will find your PC automatically. If your video is already in MP4 format then you can choose to play it directly else go for Live Conversion. Depending on the resolution of the video it will take some time to buffer but for a standard DVD resolution, the wait time is just a few seconds after which the movie starts playing without any lag there after. We even tried a 1080p movie, which initially took a little long to buffer, but once done, played flawlessly. If you’re on firmware version 3.1 or later you can also seek forward and backward. The icing on the cake is the quality of video, which is just superb. The clarity and crispness is unmatched, and I don’t think any other app out there offers you this.

Even if you don’t buy it, at least try the free version that limits you to three videos per folder.

Logitech Touch Mouse – It’s time to chuck out the DiNovo Mini

The Logitech DiNovo mini is like the Lotus Elise of the HTPC world; it’s small, compact and quite expensive. We absolutely fell in love with what Logitech had achieved here, but sadly we could never dream of owning one, as the idea of plopping 10K for a wireless mouse is ridiculous.

Ironically, Logitech have just solved that problem (and possibly shooed away the few who would have actually bought this) by launching a Touch mouse app that turns your iPod into a DiNovo mini of sorts, and what’s best- it’s free!

All you need is the server running in the background and that’s it. The app converts iPod screen into a trackpad and even supports two finger scrolling. If you need to type something, simply hit the keyboard icon and you get a familiar iPod styled keyboard. This is still v1.0 and hopefully Logitech will add other features as well like pinch zooming, etc. Now you can cross out the DiNovo mini from your wish list.

Apple will Issue Replacement iPad when Battery Runs Out

It means that iPad users will effectively have to buy a new device if their battery becomes unable to hold a full charge over time.

The iPad – which goes on sale in the United States on April 3, and in the UK by the end of next month – is a sealed unit, which means users cannot replace the battery themselves. Instead, they have to send their old iPad in to Apple, and will receive a replacement iPad in return.

“If your iPad requires service due to the battery’s diminshed ability to hold an electrical charge, Apple will replace your iPad for a service fee,” said Apple on its website. “The service costs $99, plus $6.95 shipping. The total cost is $105.95 per unit.”

Users are urged to ensure the data on their iPad is backed up before sending it in for the iPad battery replacement service, because the replacement iPad “will not contain any of your personal data”.

The move has raised eyebrows in the technology community. Several Apple products need to be returned to Apple in order for the battery to be changed, by the iPad is the first device where Apple has explicitly said it will send users a completely new unit. The iPhone, by contrast, is “serviced” by Apple before being returned to the user.

Apple has started to take pre-orders for the iPad in the United States, and the company’s website has revealed more details about the touch-screen, tablet-style computer. Users who choose a 3G model and sign up to a limited-use data plan will receive on-screen alerts to warn them how much of their data allowance they have used and how much is remaining.

Users will also need to download and install the iBooks application on their iPad via the App Strore. Users can add bookmarks to the books they are reading, look up any word in a document using the iPad’s built-in dictionary, and even have their books read aloud to them using the iPad’s VoiceOver tool.

And Apple has also added a screen rotation lock to the device, enabling users to “fix” the screen in landscape or portrait orientation, which is useful when reading lying down.

Apple is yet to announce UK pricing details for the iPad, or the cost of the battery replacement service for British consumers.

On 3rd April iPad will be Available in US Stores

Apple Inc said the first iPads will be in US stores on April 3 and hit nine international markets later in the month, easing concerns that manufacturing constraints could delay launch.

The news sent shares of Apple surging as much as 4.3 percent to an all-time high of $219.70 on the Nasdaq, as analysts said the speedy international rollout could help build sales momentum.

The 9.7-inch touchscreen iPad, which is designed to surf the Web, play video and games, and read digital books, is the most anticipated product launch from Apple since the iPhone in 2007. Chief Executive Steve Jobs unveiled the tablet in late January, but the company did not announce any international markets until Friday, when it said the tablet will go on sale in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK in late April.

“I think it eases concerns that were circulating about supply. There’s always so much speculation around a launch, and this alleviates those fears,” said Cross Research analyst Shannon Cross, adding that the breadth of the international launch should reassure investors.

Cross expects the iPad to be a major growth driver for Apple eventually. She estimates the company will sell 4 million to 5 million units in the first year, which will add $1 to earnings per share. The April 3 launch date means Apple won’t likely book any iPad revenue in the current fiscal second quarter, which closes at the end of March.

Nonetheless, Barclay’s analyst Ben Reitzes said the launch plans added some “welcome clarity.” “Not only is the device available April 3 in the US, but we believe availability in nine other countries by the end of April is likely quicker than many thought, lending potential upside to consensus estimates into mid year,” he wrote in a research note.

Analysts are currently forecasting Apple’s fiscal 2010 earnings per share at $11.62, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S, up from $9.08 last year. There has been some debate on how successful the much-hyped iPad really will be. While most agree that the device is well-designed and appealing to consumers, some analysts are not convinced there is a big market for tablet computers.

The iPad will have to compete for consumer attention with a myriad of established devices, including smartphones, netbooks and dedicated e-readers like Amazon.com Inc’s Kindle. Apple said that an iBooks application for the iPad, which will compete with the Kindle, would be available as a free download on April 3.
