Apple’s ‘Find my iPhone’ is now free in iOS 4.2

‘Find My iPhone’ program is now a standard part of the iPhone software at no additional charge. This is the one of the biggest benefit of the new update to iOS 4.2, and one that people were not expecting.

It might not seem like a huge deal, given how many other features are included with the new iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch operating system update, but iOS4.2 having the ‘Find my iPhone’ process included for free is sort of a big deal. The system has worked well, as has been well publicized, and one would think it would help put one’s mind at ease a bit about the eventuality of losing your iPhone or other iOS4 device. Previously, this service was only available as a part of Apple’s $99 per year MobileMe service. It is now free to all owners of at least one iPhone 4, iPad, or fourth-generation iPod touches. That is to say, you need the latest version of the hardware to get the service for free.

The Apple press release says “Once you create an account on a qualifying device, use your Apple ID and password to enable Find My iPhone on your other devices running iOS 4.2.” All of your family’s qualifying iOS4.2 devices can now be used with that single account. Once you have set up your account on the Apple site, you can register your device by tapping the Settings app on your device, then on “Mail, Contacts, Calendars” and finally on “Add Account.” Enter your Apple ID login and password on that screen and the device will register itself. If you do not already have an Apple ID, tap on “Create Free Apple ID” to set one up before you try to register the device.

As the name would imply, you can then find your lost or stolen iPhone, iPad, of iPod Touch.
