The MobileMe iDisk lets you access quickly the files that you have stored on your iDisk, streams videos. You can also view files in portrait and / or landscape mode. Its features include being able to send and view native file clips including music. Movies will also work but it would have to be formatted first.

The extensive list of features can be described as follows :

* Lets you quickly view files stored on your iDisk
* You can easily access Public folders
* Lets you share files from your iPhone quickly and easily
* Quickly access recently viewed files
* View iPhone supported file types – including iWork, Office, PDF, QuickTime and more (Files larger than 20MB may not be viewable)
* You can view your friends’ files stored online, if you know their MobileMe user names
* You are not required to re-enter your user name and password, as your log-in is saved between sessions.

According to Apple, files larger than 20MB would not work, also photo’s and documents are capped at 30MB. There is no way you can save files for offline viewing, there’s a local cache, but as soon as a newer file needs some space, old files are removed. Copy and paste option doesn’t work in this application.

App Store Spearheads with 1.5 Billion Downloads in 1 Year

Apple’s app store has crossed a landmark with 1.5 billion apps downloaded from its App Store after its inception. The App Store is growing at an incredible pace with more than 65,000 apps and more than 1,00,000 developers in the iPhone Developer Program.

One of the factors that leads to the App Store’s growth is the size of its installed base i.e. 40 million iPhones and iPod touches. The other could be the variety and sheer quantity of applications to choose from i.e. 65,000, according to Apple’s press release.

In a Press Release, Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO said, “The App Store is like nothing the industry has ever seen before in both scale and quality. With 1.5 billion apps downloaded, it is going to be very hard for others to catch up.”

Apple’s App Store has eclipsed its rivals in terms of its downloads volume, as the rate at which customers are buying the apps seems to be increasing day by day. The App Store is the most viable way for mobile developers to get their applications in front of customers. Its store is filled with programs that range from fake beer pouring apps to enterprise-grade programs from Oracle and Salesforce.

The popularity of the App Store has caused Apple’s mobile rivals to launch their own solutions for letting users browse, buy, download, and install apps over the air. It may be even tougher for the competition to catch up because of the App Store’s momentum, but rivals are taking different approaches to carve out their market share.

BatteryLife - App Review

Developed by Hans Einstein, BatteryLife does not use the theory of relativity to speed up your mobile web browsing, but it does manage to tell you how much power you have on your iPhone. The application boasts a warm UI with appropriate indicators for everything you need to know about how much life your iPhone’s battery has, and even to isolate those apps that eat up most of your battery.

The application displays the battery charge in percentage and graphic information and gives the charge percentage of the battery the last time you used the application. You are also shown the exact date and time of your last verification, as well as for how long the device stayed plugged to a power source. For the latter to take effect, you must charge your device with BatteryLife running.

This is where the LED indicator comes in. Situated at the bottom right side of the screen, the LED shows by colors (orange, green and red) whether the battery is being charged, full or if there is no power source charging it at the time of checking. The “i” (information) button allows you to configure the app to show these aspects of your battery life as you like.

BatteryLife can also be used to track just how much battery power some applications or processes use up on your device. Adding to the list of benefits, BatteryLife is freeware, which means you can download and use it for free, for as long as you like. The app requires an iPhone (any model) or an iPod touch (second generation only, says the iTunes description), as well as the latest software version from Apple - iPhone OS 3.0

MasterCard’s Priceless App for iPhone

MasterCard Worldwide has came forward with its “MasterCard priceless picks” effort to the iPhone through a new app. The new iPhone app, is an extension of the existing user generated Web site. Like the Web site, the iPhone application calls consumers to write reviews of their favorite restaurants, entertainment and fun experiences in general. The app also includes special offers from MasterCard partner ShopLocal, a feature of the Web site.

According to Cheryl Guerin, SVP, global digital marketing at MasterCard Worldwide, “This is an evolution of the ‘Priceless picks’ promotion that has been on our Web site since 2006.” “Consumers love to see other consumers’ opinions and that impacts the decisions that they’ve made, we’ve seen it on the Web for years and now we are seeing it more in mobile. This is about leveraging what consumers already love to do,” Guerin added.

With five different categories i.e. Priceless, Dining, Shopping, Entertainment and Other, the app is pretty cool and loads fairly quickly. It lets you filter categories. Like other iPhone apps, the app uses GPS to let a user pinpoint their current location and search destinations, as well as write in their own location and description. Seems like a hearty infusion of real information that will help bridge the gap between merely locating a place and actually visiting it. It also has a send-to-a-friend category.

The “Priceless” messaging is consistent with the credit card marketer’s overall brand messaging around priceless experiences.

For the quick promotion, MasterCard has launched a new TV campaign highlighting the functions of the app. The 15 second spot shows real life situations where people share their special experiences by in the “Priceless picks” app.

“With mobile being as prevalent as it is today, this allows us to be even more relevant to consumers,” said Guerin. “It makes consumers lives a lot easier, because it will give them priceless places, priceless deals and special experiences, right there on the mobile phone when they are out.”

MasterCard Priceless Picks marks the second in a series of iPhone applications that MasterCard is bringing consumers to make life a little easier every day. Priceless Picks joins the popular MasterCard ATM Hunter, which lets iPhone users easily locate the nearest ATM no matter where in the world they are.
